Yesterday I was in a bit of a funk…actually Monday AND Tuesday I was in a funk.
As I revealed in today’s post about my workout my progress with the IT Band issue slowed a bit. I was feeling frustrated, sad about my body and injuries, PLUS I was hormonal.
What I wanted? A 3 hour massage, chocolate cheesecake, pizza, a cure for my insomnia, lots of wine and a winning lottery ticket. And I whined in my head about all of those things!
Instead of eating everything in sight and totally derailing from my “Do Not Gail Weight Over The Holidays” plan, I decided to do something else:
Retail Therapy.
I recently purchased a Groupon for the Rack. $25 for $50! Score!
I had a list of things I wanted (new heels to match my NYE dress, new boots, a jacket, a dress…) but I had to shop smart because I wasn’t spending more than the Groupon.
I decided that shopping for clothes during “That Time” is a bad idea. Talk about a mood crusher! Plus I’m probably 5 pounds heavier just from water retention.
I hated everything I tried on. Nothing fit right. Hate the dresses!
Everything hung wrong. Accentuated bulges. I looked thick in all the wrong places.
Instead of noticing nice curves and muscles that I’m usually proud of, I fixated on big hips, lumpy fitting clothes and sagging body parts. Did I focus on the successes I’ve had? No. Did I remind myself that it wasn’t too long ago I didn’t fit into anything at The Rack? Nope. I just fixated on the negative. UGH! This was NOT helping my funk.
I did find two jackets I liked. 2 years ago I started a search for a cream colored wool jacket. I never found one in my budget and then I saw this at The Rack:
I found something I liked! That looked good! I tried on a Medium–which fit everywhere perfect except for my big Swimmer’s Shoulders. Boo. That meant I had to try a Large.
Then the never-ending debate with myself “Do I get the short jacket? Or the long jacket?”
Another random fact: during That Time I become the most INDECISIVE person on the planet. I cannot make a decision to save my life–which is very bizarre for me! I consulted with Michael via text (hence these awful iPhone photos) and we both liked the longer jacket.
Originally $89, I got it for $39! Plus a new bra. Total= $54 – $50 Groupon = $4. 🙂 That cheered me up. I scored a good sale.
I went to the gym after work and that made me feel a LOT better. Exercise really does cure a cranky mood.
Today I had a dentist appointment to get my permanent crown. I had some time to kill before that so I woke up at my normal time and went to the pool. I almost never workout in the mornings during the week because it’s really hard for me to wake up early.
Since I didn’t have a time crunch to get to work by 8, I was successful with my AM Workout! I got to the pool and was in the water by 6:25am (oy). The pool was packed too. I was surprised. I guess a lot of people try to workout before work.
The good news was that by 6:45 the pool was empty. I had the lane to myself and enjoyed the rest of my swim by myself. I felt fantastic. I even had time to relax in the hot tub.
I was able to get my flu shot, run an errand and then made it to my dentist appointment. It was such a nice change having my workout done in the morning. I didn’t have to worry about rushing to the gym right after work. I just wish I could do that every day…
QUESTION: How do you get yourself out of a funk? Are you a morning person?
Kathy
Yeah for retail therapy; a personal favorite of mine!
Denise
Firstly: that jacket is fantastic.
I just discovered your blog through amerrylife’s comment section. You are such an inspiration. Way to go!

I’m not a morning person AT ALL but since August I’ve been going to the gym by 4:30 every morning to make sure I get my workouts done. I had to go on Tuesday at night and it felt weird. 🙂

1. Jacket looks amazing! 🙂
2. I’m definitely a morning person, I’m at work by 7 and live an hour from my office.
3. Aunt Flo IS my funk.. LOL. Retail Therapy, and workouts make it better.
Have a great day! 🙂

Thanks! I like the jacket a lot. You are lucky you’re a morning person, I wish I were!

Sorry you had a funky day but it sounds like you made it right.
I don’t think I really get PMS anymore which just means I have no excuse when I’m a bitch. Darnit.
Last weekend I went to an indy store where two women I know (who are bigger than I am) have bought the same great dress. Not only was it not great on me, but even the XL was not great. I ended up buying the XL of a different dress. But still…an XL? I tried not to let it get to me and just use it as motivation but it was hard.
Good luck at the dentist!

Those damn labels on clothes get me every time. Some items I just won’t buy if it’s labeled “Large”. It’s ridiculous, really!

That jacket looks great on you! That’s a great deal, and I’m glad shopping made you feel better. Shopping and/or working out and/or wine definitely helps me when I’m in a funk… which I totally am this week 🙁 I got that Groupon too, but haven’t gone yet…. I think I’ll buy some boots. Won’t matter if I have a little extra pudge 😛

It seems like everyone is in a funk this week! Post Thanksgiving blues?
