Monday night’s dinner WAS going to be a new recipe. When I got home neither of us were in the mood for cooking something new (or complicated) so it was lazy bean burritos for dinner.
It was the peak of laziness: cheese, black beans, olives, jalapenos, lettuce, tomatoes.
After dinner I decided to start decorating a bit for Yule.Β I have a confession to make: I haven’t had a Christmas tree in over 8 years. The main reason? The kitties. I knew my little fur-monsters would eat/destroy/conquer/climb/vomit on said tree so I just didn’t bother.
Which makes me sad because I like holiday decorations! So I’m starting small.
When I moved in with Michael a year a half ago, I got rid of a LOT of clutter I’d been collecting over the years. Part of that clutter was holiday decor. I only have one small box of decorations now, so it will have to do.
Michael wasn’t too keen on the idea of decorating his bike. π
I happen to LOVE love love Christmas lights. I used to have some up inside my apartment year round because they were good mood lighting.
Fat Kitty was VERY excited about the Christmas Box. He sniffed, analyzed, pawed and poked everything. He especially liked the lights. I hope they are still hanging when I get home from work!
That little tinsel tree was my “Christmas Tree” for a few years. Lame, I know. I think this year I’m going to attempt a tree. I can’t just assume the cats will destroy it…I should see for myself.
Portland is also getting in the mood…the trees downtown all have Christmas lights, there’s decorations and of course a bomber tried to blow up our tree. π Jerk.
I also picked up some cookie cutters and Christmas sprinkles! I am VERY excited about having my first cookie party in December!
Michael said he won’t decorate cookies with me (party pooper) so I’ll just have some girlfriends over for it. His loss! π
I enjoy the holidays. The holidays mean good food, lots of friends and family and presents of course. I like giving gifts to people. I usually do most of my shopping months before December. Whenever I see something that a friend or family member would love, I buy it and stash it away.
My favorite family traditions might be a bit weird…Christmas Eve my brother and parents and I would watch the movie “The Ref.” Such a good Christmas movie. A bit off-color for many people, but perfect for our family.
Best quote ever: “You know what I’m going to get you next Christmas, Mom? A big wooden cross, so that every time you feel unappreciated for your sacrifices, you can climb on up and nail yourself to it.”
Of course, we’d also watch A Christmas Story, too (Thank you TBS for the uninterrupted loop).
And then on Christmas morning while we opened presents we’d watch another classic: Scrooged.
Bill Murray is amazing in any movie he’s in, but Scrooged is a Classic.
I’m trying to continue these traditions, plus start some new ones. For example, last Christmas Eve Michael and I had Shoe over for dinner and the three of us watched “Die Hard” (also a Christmas movie). π
QUESTION: What is your favorite Christmas/Yule/Hanukkah tradition? And what new tradition do you want to start?

Scrooged! I love that movie! That and Elf are required Christmas viewings.
Lisa Eirene
ELF is a good one!

You should watch “Long Kiss Goodnight” with Geena Davis! My mom’s and I favorite “Christmas” movie.

I seriously need to start decorating our house. I feel so behind compared to all the bloggers! No traditions yet. Nothing is ever the same every year since I met my husband!
Lisa Eirene
That must keep things fresh and exciting for sure!
Don’t feel too bad. I definitely half-assed it. π

my cat is quite sure that the tree is a big toy for her. but i just put non-breakable ornaments on the bottom and it’s been fine (i made a bunch of them last year with the wood shapes you can get at the craft store-cheap way to decorate the tree + kitty proof!)
Lisa Eirene
Thanks for the tip!!

My wife and I watch Christmas Vacation every year while wrapping gifts. We know almost every line, but it is still FUNNY!
Lisa Eirene
I forgot about that one! National Lampoon’s Christmas is a new tradition with Michael and me. I love it!
Lori (Finding Radiance)
I like the movie “Elf” – very funny!
You know, you could rig a generator up to that bike and ride it to power the lights π
Nicole
I finally get a real Christmas tree this year! (We’re crossing our fingers that our cats won’t climb it). π
Lisa Eirene
Lol! Let me know how your tree survives.
Shannon @ BetterNextTime
I’ve never seen “The Ref” but that quote is awesome! I’ll be Netflixin’ it.
My Xmas movie must-have is “Love Actually”. Can’t help it, it gives me the warm fuzzies. π
Lisa Eirene
Bridget Jones is another good one!
kate
Ill come decorate cookies with you!
Lisa Eirene
Yay!!! You should. π

If it makes you feel any better, we haven’t had a tree in four years. We had one our first year and worried a lot about the pets and the hardwood floors. Turned out we ruined the floors last year by watering houseplants on unsealed saucers. Wanh wanh.
We do have little tinsel trees and that’s fine with me. I’ll try not to get any more Scroogey than that.
I actually went to University Village today, and it was already so crowded (and totally playing Xmas music) that I tried to get as much shopping done as possible. It was a start.
Lisa Eirene
I bet U Village was a madhouse. It’s a bit of a madhouse even when it’s not Xmas!

CANDY CANE SPRINKLES WHATWHAT??!!

I LOVE the Ref. Totally forgot about that movie but I’m gonna have to pick it up now.
We always watch Christmas Vacation — “hey Griswold, where do you think you’re gonna put a tree that big?” “Bend over and I’ll show you!”
I’m also loving your Xmas decor — it’s a refreshing departure from all of the picturesque, stylish Christmas barf that’s been crapping up the blog world lately. π CHEERS.

We watch “Holiday Inn” Yes, its old, but still a classic. Don’t bother with “White Christmas”, inferior remake. The original is fantastic with great music. We also have to watch “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.”
We have a little 4 foot plastic tree up on a box to make it taller. What we did when we had cats was have a pre-lit plastic tree so they couldn’t take off the lights.
