I realized this weekend when I was trapped in my house sick that I am 100% a Boredom Eater. I think that was the bulk of my problem when I was 250 pounds. I would spend too much time on the couch, watching TV, bored…and what else is there to do when bored but eat? Being sick this weekend was the first time in a long time that I had nothing to do. I wasn’t working out, I wasn’t seeing friends, I wasn’t doing things with Michael. It makes so much sense! Thank goodness I didn’t give into those boredom snacking over the weekend. It was quite the eye opener.
QUESTION: Are you a boredom eater? How do you prevent it?
Last night I went back to the gym after 7 days off. Damn did I lose a little bit in those 7 days. If you remember, last time I worked out I was happy to have to increase the weights on the machines. Yeah…7 days of no weight lifting has me right back where I started.
I could tell half-way through my weight lifting that I was going to be sore! I took it easy, went light on the weight amounts, and told myself it was okay to take it easy after being sick.
I worked extra hard on the hip strengthening exercises.
I also went easy on the core work. No point in wearing myself out the first time back at the gym! I was able to hold the Plank for 30 shaking seconds three times!
I also did my Return to Running Program: Week 3. Week 3 and Week 4 means jogging — no walking — for 1.5 miles!
I set the treadmill speed between 3.8 and 4.0. It was a good jogging pace, nothing too extreme, and I honestly zoned out. I didn’t even notice that I was jogging! It felt good to be back at it.
I had no leg pain, my IT Band seemed okay. I was happy with that.
Jog Stats:
Time: 23:38
Distance: 1.5 miles
Calories Burned: 198
I had a good first workout after a week off.
Gym Stats:
Time: 1:18
Total Calories Burned: 561
When I got home, Michael had dinner ready (he’s the best). Annie’s Organic Mac n’ Cheese…but fixed up. He did a roux with white cheddar to jazz up the cheese sauce (like usual) and chopped up a hot dog. But this time? He did something even more awesome.
Cayenne Pepper!! Wow! What a difference that made! Dinner was awesome. Who needs regular mac n’ cheese now? I definitely endorse this new ingredient. 😉
You must try it. It was so fantastic. In case you were wondering, I still count my calories every day. I use the iPhone App called “My Fitness Pal.” After I entered all my food and exercise for the day, I finalized it and got this message:
I’m highly skeptical of that number, but a few pounds down would be nice! It also gave me a breakdown of how I ate for the day:
Not too shabby. And I love seeing where things add up. I definitely go over my sugar target each day. Part of that is the fruit that I eat for snacks. The app is really easy to use and it keeps me in check. It’s second nature now.
QUESTION: How do you track your food?
Becky
I track via My Fitness Pal as well! And as for the being a boredom eater–that is my to a tee. The only way I’ve found to combat it is to distract myself. Read a book, take a walk, ANYTHING to get away from the food.

YEP! Keep yourself busy. That’s my secret too.

I’m not that good with tracking except that I post most of what I eat on my blog. When I followed weight watchers closely, I used the e-tools to track my food/points and that worked really well. I tend to get super obsessive about things so I’m trying to back down a bit – and so far its going fine. I’m maintaining, though I would like to lose a few more pounds eventually. 🙂
Lori (Finding Radiance)
Cayenne and hot sauce make everything better! Well, except for coffee….
I track with Livestrong. I go through periods where I don’t track at all, and then I will go back to tracking. I actually kind of like doing it because I am a numbers gal.
Lisa Eirene
I’m a numbers gal too, which is why it seems to work for me.

I use the LoseIt app on my iPod Touch. LOVE it! It has a similar format and also has a cute graph to log in your weight whenever you want. I limit myself to 1 official weigh in each week in LoseIt but I weigh myself pretty regularly right now as I am working more aggressively right now to lose these last 10 pounds. 🙂
Notes from the Fatty File
I have fallen off the calorie-tracking wagon and need to get back on it as I find myself getting cocky and eating a lot of things I shouldn’t 🙁
Speaking of eating, you know what’s AMAZING in mac n cheese? Chipotle peppers, the kind that come in the little can. One little spoon of the sauce that comes in the chipotle en adobo mixed with TJ’s 4 cheese mac n cheese is seriously heaven on a plate. Drooooool.
Lisa Eirene
That sounds REALLY good!
Carbzilla
I use Calorie King but it doesn’t have a lot of food that I need to enter so almost everything is custom.
Good call on the Boredom eating. I don’t know what my problem is but I was making Hween treats today and candy just went automatically to my mouth. It didn’t get out of control but I hadn’t had any intention of eating chocolate. It’s like my body is possessed, and my hand goes to my mouth before my brain even gets a chance to kick in!
PS I LOVE cayenne on almost everything, especially popcorn!
Lisa Eirene
That sounds good on popcorn!

Hi! What HRM is that? I’m looking for a really simple one that measures heart rate and shows calories burned. Despite working in IT, I find my husband’s HRM to be really confusing and can never find the calories burned after a workout LOL
Karla
Nevermind, I’ve found it! It’s a Polar F7 and is on my Christmas list 😀
Lisa Eirene
I actually have a link to the HRM monitor on the front page of my website. It will take you to Amazon.com!

How do I track my food? By keeping a Food Journal on a online community where I can get tips and motivation plus support. There is only ladies on the group which is great for me. Here is the community: http://fitbloggers.ning.com/
Jennifer is Always Sick
I have the same issue – I get sick and can’t do anything really. And I’m sick often, so I will start a new, healthy weight loss / get healthy program, and I’m excited about it, and then the kids and I catch something that makes us all miserable, and then, we’re finally well again, and I don’t get back to the program. 🙁
As far as eating when I’m bored – absolutely. I’m busy busy all day long, and then in the evenings, my husband and I sit and watch TV together…and the snacking begins…and it’s always bad stuff. Ugh!
Kel
I use a website called nutrimirror.com to track my calories as well as track my nutrition goals. While there is no app (yet) I love the community on the website, as well as getting the nutrition stats. It is one thing to eat a certain number of calories to maintain my weight, but I want to be as healthy as possible doing it. Stop by and check it out! I also write a weekly column on the site called TGIF with Kel.

Thanks for sharing MyFitnessPal – so far it seems much easier (read: less time consuming) to track food, and I like the report at the end better as well.
Thanks! 🙂
I’m also seriously wanting a heart rate monitor.
Lisa Eirene
I’m glad you like it!
