One of my favorite websites is Eat This, Not That. The calories they come up with are ASTOUNDING. In the spirit of that website, I’m doing my own version: it’s things I do in my own life to make good choices.
Losing weight and keeping it off is about making small changes and choices throughout the day. The choices get easier as your palate changes. For example, when I first started my journey I switched to Diet soda. It tasted nasty! I wasn’t sure I could go on with my plan to lose weight because diet soda and diet food just tasted so nasty. I slowly got used to it and then I found I could not eat really fatty food anymore. Regular soda is a sugar shock for me.
Instead of This:
A homemade turkey burger can be half the calories of a greasy cheeseburger from Red Robin (1129 calories in the Whiskey River BBQ Burger) or McDonalds.
Instead of This:
Try This:
Papa Murphy’s Take n’ Bake is surprisingly good and their “deLite” pizzas are about half the calories of a Pizza Hut. One slice of deLite Pepperoni is 165 calories. I get my pizza fix without feeling like I over-indulged.
Instead of This:
Attune chocolate bars taste great and they are about 90 calories. Plus they are packed with more probiotics than yogurt!
Instead of This for Lunch:
Try This for Lunch:
Red Inca Quinoa with steamed veggies and Goddess Dressing. One of my favorite meals. Totally filling, low in calories, and packed with really healthy stuff.
Instead of This:
Try This:
One cup of spaghetti squash is about 40 calories. Top it with spaghetti sauce, turkey meatballs (or vegetarian meatballs) for a truly awesome dinner. Unless you are carb-loading the night before a big race, though!
See, it’s the little changes that make a huge difference. The food I eat still tastes good. I just save hundreds of calories by making BETTER choices.
QUESTION: What healthier choices do you make to achieve the healthy and fit YOU?
Beth @ Beth's Journey to Thin
I LOVE spaghetti squash but haven’t had any yet this season – must get on that stat!
I totally agree – small changes make HUGE differences over time. I think getting out of the overhaul everything mentality and instead focusing on small changes you can make makes the whole thing feel less overwhelming and more doable.

I have started making more and more swaps lately. I will have sushi instead of a burger and fries. Water is now my go to drink. A plain soft serve instead of a sundae. Whole wheat pasta instead of regular. Little changes really do add up!

They do. And sushi is so healthy! As long as it’s not the tempura of course…

What a great post!!!
@irun2befit
Awesome post! I like your substitute foods. For the dark chocolate I keep Hershey’s Special Dark fun sized hidden on the way top shelf. They’re about 70 calories.
Lisa Eirene
I love the miniature “fun” sizes. They are usually the perfect amount.

I make my own pizzas with Mama Marys thin crusts. they’re SO good!

I love spaghetti squash. It’s such a great substitution and you can eat so much of it guilt-free.

I now drink water instead of diet soda. I noticed that when I am really thirsty now water is all that works. I’m working on changing out some food options. I use turkey meatballs in my spaghetti instead of regular ground beef. Lisa, keep up the good work. You are such an inspiration. I love your site!
