When I was 250 pounds, I drank a lot of soda. I’d have one at lunch, in the afternoon, with dinner…And of course, it was REAL soda. It doesn’t take too much to add up to a LOT of calories. And they were empty calories. I was probably drinking about 400-500 calories a day. Not only was I soda addict, I loved fruit juice. I’d have a huge glass of orange juice every morning with breakfast….another 200 calories at least. If you add that up, that’s about 700+ calories a day from liquid. Holy cow! Cow indeed….
Of course, when I started watching what I eat and counting calories, I switched to diet soda immediately. Trying to stay under 2000 calories a day does NOT allow for real soda OR fruit juice!
In the recent years the new fad has been flavored waters. I admit, I absolutely LOVED Vitamin Water when it first came out. I thought it was “healthy” so I guzzled it like there was no tomorrow. Then I looked at the back of the bottle. Ooops…looks like there’s almost as many CALORIES in Vitamin Water as a regular soda!
Don’t be fooled by the 50 calories. Look careful at how many servings are in the bottle (this always screwed me up when I first started counting calories). There’s 2.5 servings in each Vitamin Water bottle. That’s 125 empty calories! Now check out the back of this regular Coke:
A regular coke has about 200 calories in it. A smaller sized Pepsi (in the can) is about 160 calories. Not much more than the Vitamin Water!
The good news is that Vitamin Water is starting to make the 10 calorie drinks. Again, look at the servings because it’s really like 30 calories a bottle, not just 10.
Well, it’s Monday morning. I hope everyone had a good weekend! This morning’s breakfast was scrambled eggs, 1 piece of toast, and 2 turkey sausage links. It’s also my Rest Day. Yuck.

I used to drink vitamin water all the time, too (especially when I was hungover lol). Then I wised up and realized it wasn’t actually healthy. Plus, buying that stuff all the time was expensive! My boyfriend drinks a Vitamin Water 10 every morning. I don’t think that’s so bad, especially since it’s made with stevia instead of artificial sweeteners. The hippie in me doesn’t like how much waste he’s creating, though!

I’m with you! It’s so much waste. I really hate plastic water bottles. Lisa

I love the new low cal ones. They taste just like the original to me! And you’re right – the number of serving sizes in a container is a huge stumbling block for a lot of people just starting out. Why not just include the calories for the whole bottle!?

I agree. I wondered the same thing about why they don’t have the entire calorie count. I think it’s to trick people into buying things that aren’t healthy. They glance at the back and see 50 calories and are all excited! They don’t realize it’s really 150!!! -Lisa

I was shocked when I realized how many calories I drank at one point- that’s why I always try to stick to unsweetened tea and coffee with very little creamer… I’d rather eat my calories!! 😉

Me too!! I started really limiting my alcohol intake too. As much as I love wine, I think I love chocolate more. 🙂 -Lisa

and yes, it’s depressing how many calories and sugar can be in drinks.

I used to drink the best coffees at Starbucks…White chocolate Mocha with caramel, whipped cream, and chocolate shavings. Mmmm. Can we say 900 calories??

I’m glad I found your blog! Your story is incredible 😀
I used to be addicted to diet coke! It might have been 0 calories but the chemicals seriously messed up my brain lol. I was cranky!!

Thanks! I was addicted to diet soda too! I would drink it all the time because it was zero calories! I’m with you, I felt icky because of it. -Lisa

I too love Vitamin Water, but have switched over to Vitamin 10 and only about 1-2 a month. I admit, I just picked up one today because I got a free coupon by becoming a fan of their Facebook Page. I do love free stuff.

Free stuff is always better than stuff we pay for! 🙂
