I wanted to check in with everyone. How is everyone doing? How is your mental health? How is your physical health?
This is definitely a trying time for everyone. Some states are locked down. (Oregon is.) I’ve been working from home since March 14th or something like that. I think the last time I went to my gym was March 12th. Then it closed.
I am super grateful that our new house is bigger (it’s twice the size of our old house, which was about 1200 square feet) so we can ALL find a space in the quarantine if we need to be alone. I am definitely one of the those people that likes my alone time. Don’t get me wrong, I love my family and want to be with them, but mentally and emotionally I also need “me” time and away time and the gym was some “me time” that I don’t really have access to now (my gym closed pretty early on during the covid-19 pandemic).
When we moved into the new house last year we had space for a home a gym. This was something on our “must have” list when we were house hunting. Not so much for me because I had a gym membership, but definitely for Michael because he’s not a gym guy and likes working out at home. So our basement in the new house has a space that we’ve designated as The Gym.
A family friend gave us their treadmill (for free!!!) last summer. So that’s awesome. Michael already had a weight bench, so that’s there. We have a bunch of kettlebells of different weights. Michael set up his bike on the bike trainer. We have a big TV down there so we can watch our shows while we work out (that definitely makes the treadmill tolerable). We have fans, a bosu ball, some free weights, a medicine ball, foam rollers, a pull up bar, and various random “gym” type stuff.
The ceiling is kind of low (it’s a basement) so we can’t do things like jump rope down there–but we can do jumping jacks! I bought some foam interlocking mats that help designate the gym and make it more comfortable.
So what am I doing right now?
M/W/F/Sat/Sun are my workout days.
I alternate my days where I run on the treadmill, or I walk on the treadmill with the treadmill at an elevation and I put weights in a backpack and carry that (last time I did that it was 15 pounds in my backpack) so it’s like “hiking”.
For weights and stuff:
- Kettlebell swings
- Pushups
- Bicep curls
- Step ups (I use the basement stairs) with bicep curls
- Overheard triceps
- Triceps dips
- 1 leg Romanian Deadlifts
- Deadlifts
- Bent over rows
- Shoulder Press
- Pec Fly
- Chest Press
- Toe Touches with weights
- Bird Dogs
- Bicycles (abs)
- Glute Bridges (variations: 1 leg glute bridge, glute bridges with weights)
- Planks
- Cobra stretch
- Mountain Climbers
- Jump Squats
- Squats
- Jumping Jacks
- See Saw Press
- Side Lunges
- Reverse Crunches
- Kneeling dumbbell halos
- Clams
These are all things I can do with free weights or kettlebells, so that’s good! It’s definitely better than nothing!
Michael and I are back to doing yoga. It feels good! We bought a subscription to an app that we really like (on Black Friday) because the free videos we found online weren’t really good. Even the popular ones. But this app is GREAT! I highly recommend it. You can choose what kind of yoga workout you want to do, how long, what area you want to target, etc.
Working from home Monday – Friday and keeping a regular workout schedule has DEFINITELY helped me mentally, emotionally and physically during this shut down. When I’m stressed about all of this, I clean or workout and it helps. It distracts me, keeps me off social media, gets my endorphins going…it helps a lot. When the weather cooperates I bike or go for walks.
QUESTION: How has your fitness changed?
Marianne
Well of course it has changed! My husband is working from home. I have to do my workouts in the living room because here in Florida NO ONE has a basement. Our gym has been closed since March 1st. I am doing various workouts with free weights since the weights go up to 35 lbs. Then after weights I go on a 30 minute walk outside it is already 90* outside. Florida is ONLY on a social distancing order which is ridiculous. We have Avery large senior population but a dumb governor! But making the best of it. My car hasn’t moved in six days.

I have to admit, I am jealous of your sunshine, even the 90 degree weather. It’s been raining here for a week and looks like rain for the next 10 days which means being cooped up in the house even worse. It was nice when we could at least go for walks a few times a day. 🙁
My car hasn’t moved in 7 days!!

Did you list what app you are using for yoga and I missed it? I’d love to check it out. I’ve been looking for good online yoga with a lot of low/gentle level variety because I had a pretty major abdominal surgery almost 3 weeks ago. I need to start moving again! Thanks:)

Oh sorry!! It’s called Down Dog. It’s great. You can choose your level, how long, etc. Give it a try and let me know!

I miss my gym!!! Especially since I’m having a bit of a PF flare-up, so would love to be able to do more activities that are easier on my feet. I’m still running 4 days a week, 3 of those are at 5am, so no problems with social distancing LOL For the cross-training, I’ve dusted off some of my old workout DVDs – I have to say that I am NOT in Boot Camp shape anymore! And my workout room is currently doubling as hubby’s at-home office, so we have to coordinate our times a bit. I would love to get out on the bike more, but the weather is just not cooperating. It’s good for you guys that both you and Michael are at home so you can tag-team parent – I know that can be exhausting even in normal circumstances. Hang in there!

I’m sorry to hear about your PF. Does yoga help it at all? I was thinking yesterday that I wanted to try Tai Chi again. I took a class a million years ago and remembered liking it. Maybe a video would be fun.
Being able to trade off the parenting and home school stuff is a big help. We’re both tired from everything!
What DVDs are you using?
emmaclaire
I haven’t tried yoga, just doing PT exercises from the last bout I had with it 🙁 The DVDs I’ve been using are Biggest Loser, Jillian Michaels, and I did one on Monday with Ginny Miller using bands and weights and OMGosh – I am really feeling it in the glutes! I knew I’d been neglecting certain aspects of my workouts, but jeez Louise – ouch!

Ha! That’s awesome they worked!

We stopped going to the gym on 3/10 and it officially (temporarily) closed on 3/16 which is when we started working from home.
My Pilates studio also closed on 3/16. They are starting to do some classes via Zoom but I haven’t signed up yet.
We have kettlebells so we cobbled together some strength workouts. We’ve also really liked the free Orange Theory FItness workouts which use some household objects as equipment.
And I’m doing the Baby Shark abs challenge every day (12 days streak going on).
It’s mostly been cold, grey, and rainy here so I haven’t gotten outside much. I really need to get better at that.

It’s great that so many places are offering free online workouts and videos! I’ve seen a lot of options so far, so that’s great. We just have to do them. LOL
