About 10 months ago I joined my Hood to Coast team. Since then I’ve had a lot of people voice different opinions to me about it. Most have been in awe, and most are supportive. But there have been a few people who have said things like:
“That sounds awful!”
“You will be miserable!”
“So and So did HTC and hated it!”
“Running ruins your knees.”
“You’re crazy for wanting to do this!”
“Who wants to sit in a van with sweaty runners for 36 hours?”
I’ve heard it all, many many times. I call these people The Naysayers. They are the doomsday people that IN MY OPINION are jealous. Jealous that I’m taking a risk. Jealous that I’m going to participate in something epic and possibly life-changing. I don’t intend that to sound mean at all. I can be a jealous person too, and I think for me–jealousy happens because I wish I could do it too!
I don’t know what to expect.
I’m sure I will be in agony. I worry that my body isn’t ready for Hood To Coast.
I will probably wonder, “Why did I want to do this?” at some point during the race.
I could quite possibly regret ever taking on this experience but I’m going into it with positive thoughts and anticipation.
I’m not a very competitive person but one thing I can for sure count on: I get the Race Day Bug. Before I participated in Reach the Beach, I had doubts about my abilities and whether or not I could even cross the finish line on my bike (55 miles). But I was the fastest I’d ever been on a bike. I was energized, pumped, completely excited about finishing. And even when my bike broke with 10 miles left until the Beach–I still loved every minute of the race.
Somehow, I think Hood to Coast will be similar. At least–I hope so (crossing fingers). 😉
QUESTION: Do you have Naysayers in your life? Do you have Naysayers that don’t support your goals or weight loss? How do you deal with them?
Check out an old post I wrote about Weight Loss Saboteurs.
The Return of Steak Sunday
Dinner last night was steak! It’s been awhile since we’ve had our ritual of Sunday Steak Night. With my tooth issues, the root canal, etc I was eating a lot of soft food.
I was in charge of the gnocchi while Michael did the steaks out on the grill. I measured out two servings of gnocchi and cooked them.
We had the gnocchi with pesto. It’s an awesome combination with the steak.
I poured us both a glass of red wine to go with dinner– but just one. I wasn’t feeling like I needed more than one glass last night. It had been an exhausting weekend.
Quenett is my favorite Hood River winery. We always come home with several bottles after visiting Quenett. Last night I opened the bottle of Redd Red Wine. It’s an excellent red and goes well with steak. It has a lighter flavor than most full-bodied red wines. I like how there’s a touch of sweetness to it.
Redd Red Wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah (Syrah is one of my new favorite wines, too). If you are ever in the Pacific Northwest, I highly recommend checking out Quenett!
QUESTION: What’s your favorite winery?

I don’t discriminate when it comes to wine… I love it all! 🙂
