On Friday Michael and I celebrated our 6 month anniversary! It’s hard to believe we’ve been married for HALF A YEAR already. Crazy. Sometimes it feels like we just got married. Sometimes it feels like we’ve been married forever. π We’re actually celebrating 7 years together this June, so I guess we have been together forever!
The anniversary kind of snuck up on us and we didn’t do gifts or cards or anything, but we did go out to dinner to celebrate. Michael had been wanting to try a new BBQ restaurant nearby, Smokehouse Tavern, on SE Morrison.
It was a super cute place, totally Portland Hipster. It wasn’t crowded because it was a Thursday, March Madness (apparently) and a sunny day…and we were kind of there early. But once we were leaving people were starting to fill the place.
We decided to start with an appetizer, the Deviled Eggs. That’s the new thing in Portland. Every restaurant is trying to be unique with their Deviled Eggs. This one was really good but difficult to eat because the sausage link was so much heavier than the egg. I ended up eating them separately, so it kind of defeated the purpose. Despite that, it was good. The sausage link was outstanding! Next time I’m going to have to order the sausage entree.
Mmmm good. Michael ordered an Old Fashioned and I got a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. The beer menu was pretty good–it was limited but they had some new local beers available! I was happy to see Crux on the menu after trying it in Bend a few months ago. Great beer.
And of course, Shiner. What BBQ place wouldn’t have that?! Okay, now the food. We both got brisket. I got the regular brisket and Michael got the brisket ends– the “black and fatty” part. The part that melts in your mouth like cubes of butter. Β It was amazing. π
My brisket was pretty good but nothing compared to Michael’s. The brisket end cuts are the way to go. Michael got the collard greens and french fries as his sides. I got the coleslaw and the pickled veggies. π
Loved my sides. They were really tasty! Everything was delicious. I wouldn’t say it was the best BBQ in Portland. That’s Podnah’s for sure. I’d put this place in the running though for top 5. I’d have to go back and try some more of the other options to really make a conclusion. π
I ate all of my coleslaw and half of my brisket and saved the rest of it for leftovers to have for lunch at work the next day. Β Overall the restaurant was great, the service was good, the food was good. Can’t really compare it to Franklin’s BBQ (nothing compares) or Podnah’s but it was decent and a whole lot closer to our place than Podnah’s!
We went home and settled in to watch The Jinx (the documentary about Robert Durst). Romantic, eh? But the show is really, really good and once you start watching you can’t stop. It’s a crazy story! And I’m surprised that I’d never heard of this story before now. I’m into true crime stories, yet this never made it on my radar until recently.
It was a nice anniversary dinner and evening. 6 months down. 6 more to go to the first anniversary! I have no idea yet what we are going to do for it. We’ve talked about New Orleans. Neither of us have been and we’d like to go. I want to try the food (HELL YA!), go on a swamp boat tour and hear the amazing music. We’re still in the planning stages, but if you have recommendations for New Orleans, let me know!
It’s really nice to feel content. For a long time it felt like our lives were in limbo and chaos for a lot of reasons and then after getting married a lot of that went away. We’re scheduling the kitchen counter installation so that’s one more thing that will soon be done. Slowly we are taking care of all the “pending” things that have plagued us for years! I’m happy and content with Michael and our little life–and all our little critters in the house.
Bella is doing SO GOOD out of her crate! We’re doing half days now and hopefully soon we’ll be able to leave her out full time. She’s doing so good. She’s not getting bored or anxious and destroying things. She’s getting along with the kitties. Whenever we get home now all the animals greet us at the door! I seriously think that Bella and Fat Kitty are cuddling when we aren’t home! This is Fat Kitty resting his head on Bella’s paws:
They are ALMOST FRIENDS! I knew it!! π It makes me happy!

We really really want to go to New Orleans, and it would be so much fun going with you guys! We can’t go this year, but next year’s open. Let’s do it!
Lisa Eirene
That would be so much fun! We’d love to travel with you guys!

happy six months! Jason and I got secret married in a small ceremony on Valentines Day last year (so the big wedding in September was to celebrate with friends and family), so we’ve already hit our year. one year gift is paper, and we both gifted each other something paper – mine was a framed intaglio of a Portland map, and he got me a map of Paris! crazy, it’s almost like we know each other π
we watched the Durst documentary also – and “why haven’t we heard about this?” is what Jason and I both said! crazy story, I was also wondering how he was “free” after confessing to dismembering. crazy. he has plenty of money to spend on the best defense, and Jason thinks this will be another OJ…
Lisa Eirene
I think it’s awesome you guys got secretly married. We’d talked about it a few times over the years, actually. π
I love that you guys essentially got each other the same anniversary gift. Hmm…paper. I wonder what I can do for ours. I need to start thinking now! LOL
What I want to know is why didn’t Robert Durst leave the country?! If he was that rich why isn’t he sitting next to Roman Polanski somewhere he can’t be extradited!??!

Wow. Only 6 months? I thought it had been longer. In that first pic: Look at the way that man is hugging you, gurrrl. That man loves you, gurrrrl.

Happy six month anniversary. I am celebrating my 8 year wedding anniversary this month and I was just like, where did it go??? It goes by so fast.
Aww I love that Bella is doing so great. She really is a happy doggy. Love seeing her smiling face on my Instagram feed!!
Lisa Eirene
Thanks Kelly! Glad you like the Bella pics. π
Wow 8 years! Congrats!

Happy Anniversary! We are at 16 so we don’t do half anniversaries anymore π
NOLA is awesome – the food is the best I’ve ever had – I would highly recommend it although not when it’s warm. Such a great city.
Lisa Eirene
Yeah we don’t really celebrate half anniversaries but this one seemed fitting. π
We’re thinking Sept/Oct for NOLA. Maybe it won’t be that hot then???
Sophia
Congrats and I wish 60 more years together!
Lisa Eirene
Thank you Sophia!

New Orleans!!!!! I so, so love New Orleans. You would really enjoy it there, I know. Who doesn;t? LOL You definitely want to make time for the French Quarter. See a cemetery. Eat lots of beignets.
Good music can be heard at Fritzels and Cafe beignet. Good jazz there. You also will want to hear some zydeco, which is played all around.
Fauberg has the Snug Jazz harbor with bigger name acts as well.
Lisa Eirene
If we decide to go to New Orleans I will definitely need recommendations and tips!

Happy anniversary! The food looks delicious, great place to celebrate if you ask me.
Hooray for Bella! We sometimes talk about how fun it would be to put up a camera in our house to see what she’s doing all day π A colleague of mine did it once to see what his cats were doing all day. Turned out they slept the entire day LOL.
Lisa Eirene
Yeah I’m pretty sure that all the animals just sleep when we are gone!

it’s hard but it only gets better π

Thanks Carla!

Congrats on six months! That flew by, didn’t it?!
In the midwest we call Michael’s cut of brisket “burnt ends” and they are rockstar delicious. The fat gets rendered and crispy, yet the meat is super tender. My mouth is literally watering as I write this!
Lisa Eirene
Michael’s goal is to get a smoker/grill and start doing his own brisket. π

Congratulations on your 6 month anniversary! It does fly by, doesn’t it?
I was down in your fair city last weekend, picking up Princess from OSU and meeting my cousins from LA for a visit. We had a blast and ate like kings. It is so dang easy to get around on public transportation there – Seattle has much to learn from the Rose City.
And I would encourage Michael to get a smoker. You can get one relatively cheaply, and it is so yummy to smoke your own salmon, turkey, brisket, etc. This is the model we have and it’s plenty big:

So glad you enjoyed your visit! Yes, I have to agree, Portland has great public transportation and it’s so much better than Seattle.
Thanks for the link! I will share that with Michael.
