I love coffee. I usually limit it to one cup a day although there are definitely days where I need an I.V. of it for sure. A few years ago I made a new year’s resolution to start making my own coffee at work because I was spending way too much at Starbucks over the year. I added it up and that illustrated that I need to just suck it up and learn how to make a cup of coffee.
Before the holidays I was asked to review some brewed cocoa from the nice people at Crio Bru. I said yes because it sounded intriguing AND they have a Kickstarter campaign and I totally support people who use Kickstarter (I may be using it in the future, in fact!).
At first I thought it was their brand of coffee they were selling. When I received it, I saw that it was much more. It was also CHOCOLATE. (You had me at chocolate.) Their drinks are the world’s first cocoa espresso. It’s brewed cocoa that is made from roasted and ground cocoa beans. It brews in your coffeemaker or French press just like regular coffee does.
It only has 10 calories per serving in it. They claim that their cocoa is also an appetite suppressant due to the natural stimulant “Theobromine” in it. You can check out their health benefits here. Their claim is that it gives us a “holistic high” and we’ll feel more focused and energized. Which is the sole reason that I drink coffee, honestly. In fact, when I first saw it and read “cocoa” I had to check out their FAQ‘s because I wanted to make sure there was some sort of caffeine in it!
What does it taste like? Chocolate. With a hint of coffee. I’m in! The first one I tried was called “Kabenau” and it came from Papua New Guinea. The package said it had hints of lime and red grapefruit but what I smelled when I unzipped the package was dark chocolate and raspberries. Wow, what an aroma! It was heavenly.
While it was brewing at my desk, my office was filled with the smell of hot cocoa. It was so nice. At 10 calories a serving, this would be a great treat if you’re craving chocolate.
I don’t know that there is an “appetite suppressant” specifically but I DO notice that when I have a cup of coffee at work, it tides me over for a few hours until I eat a snack or lunch. I liked the flavor a lot. I think more things should be chocolate flavored!
QUESTION: Have you tried Crio Bru cocoa?
DISCLAIMER: I was asked to review the Crio Bru cocoa but all opinions are my own.

That sounds amazing. I need the KCups pronto!

I’ve been mixing the cocoa in with my coffee when I brew it. Such a great combo!
Deb
I’m actually been thinking of maybe adding a teaspoon of cocoa powder to the coffee grounds when I brew a pot.
Lisa Eirene
I’ve never tried that either. Bet it’s good.
Ann
I will definitely look for this! I do not like coffee. I like cocoa tho and drink it alot in the winter!
Lisa Eirene
It’s a good alternative to coffee if that’s not your drink.
Lee Anna
It sounds so tasty!
Lisa Eirene
It smells amazing, too!!
Rachel
Do you know if it’s sold in stores in Portland?
Lisa Eirene
If you check out this link: http://www.criobru.com/locations/ You can type your address in and find the nearest location to buy it. It looks like there is one place in Portland.

I’ve never heard or seen this, but it definitely sounds interesting. I’m a bit skeptical that it would truly taste like chocolate though . . . kind of like I was disappointed that egg nog tea did not turn out to be a decent replacement for egg nog. I’d try it though, just to check it out!
Lisa Eirene
It’s a combination of coffee and cocoa in it’s flavor. It definitely doesn’t disappoint.

The way you have described it definitely makes me want to try it!! It sounds delicious.
Lisa Eirene
I enjoy it! I’ve been mixing it in with my coffee and it makes it taste so great.

I haven’t tried it. My daughter drinks foo foo coffee drinks. Foo foo meaning flavored with chocolate, low calorie, sweetened, la-de-dah 3 to 5 dollars per cup. I’ll tell her about this product. She will probably be interested. I brew my own by the teaspoon from the generic medium roast coffee can, to the one cup coffee maker at home for about 5 cents per cup. I add Stevia and a tbsp. of half and half. That’s the way I like it. But I liked your review:)
Lisa Eirene
Yep, those are the drinks I used to get! But they were super high in calories. I’m not a huge coffee fan, I get it black and then add flavored creamer. I liked adding the cocoa to it to further mask the black coffee flavor. 🙂

Sounds like an interesting drink! I usually have 1 or 2 coffees a day and it wouldn’t hurt for one of them to be a cruo bru 🙂
Lisa Eirene
I try to limit my coffee intake to 1 a day. Any more than that and I’d be up all night.
Lori
This is uber interesting to me! I bet John would love it as well. You know me – I am quite the coffee drinker, although I do try to stick to decaf at night.
Lisa Eirene
You would probably love this, Lori, check it out!

Not in Canada! Nooo! Ahh well, very cool sounding!

Bummer! 🙁
