I have bipolar disorder type II as well as pretty bad anxiety, both of which are *mostly* controlled by medication. But there are times where I simply cannot handle anything, and those are the times I am equally likely to overeat or not eat at all for a few days. The good thing is those times are few and far between, and more often then not, if I have a bad day, I get some loves from our puppybutt, and go for a walk. It *is* amazing how much better an adoring pet can make you feel! Sashi can always make her mama smile no matter how bad my day is. I can be bawling my eyes out and her silly face makes me laugh every time.

That’s great that you’ve found more positive ways of dealing with things. Animals and walking are excellent choices!

And if you slip up with the food, how do you get back on track?

I just try to make my next choice the right choice. It might not fully make up for the way I screwed up, but getting back on track as soon as possible is the important thing. Sometimes you just have to put the mess up out of your mind and just finish the day like you should have started it!

That’s good. Slip-ups are bound to happen but if you try to correct it as soon as possible it usually doesn’t make a huge difference. The trick is to not say “whatever! I give up!” and keep eating poorly because of one mistake. (Been there, done that!)

Awesome post! I used to (obviously) cope with rewarding myself with food. Now, I will read a book talk with my husband or spend time creating a healthy meal. (I don’t think it’s counts as eating my problems away, because the actually preparing of the food is de-stressing me). I used to go for walks, but now it’s a bit too cold out for that!

Those are all great coping methods! I like that you talk to your husband, too. What do you do if your husband is the source of your stress?

Great post Lisa. I find that exercise is a great stress reliever for me and I can really tell when I have to take a day off.

Agree. I tend to be more tired and more cranky on rest days. I can really tell the difference when I don’t exercise. Exercising gives me energy and boosts my moods!
