After going on vacation for a few days I was excited to get back on track with my normal workout routine. While I did workout during my vacation (gym on Friday, run on Saturday) it wasn’t quite the same.
I took Sunday as a Rest Day because we were traveling. I didn’t get home from the airport Sunday night until almost 8pm and I just didn’t feel like trying to fit in a workout. No thanks! Monday I woke up feeling tired and run down so I decided to make Monday another Rest Day. I needed a day to decompress after whirlwind traveling, plane hopping and exhausting fun.
Tuesday
By Tuesday I felt rested and ready to get back at it. I felt like my body had recovered enough. After work I headed to the gym to go swimming. I went to another gym that didn’t have water aerobics classes and was happy to find that the pool was near empty! Score! I swam for 50 minutes and it felt absolutely wonderful. I’d missed the pool.
Dinner was an easy one when I got home–turkey burgers with sliced tomatoes and steamed cauliflower. I’d missed our food after eating out so much.
Wednesday
After work I headed to the gym to get back at weight lifting. I am trying really hard to get back on track with a regular, consistent weight lifting routine. It’s hard with traveling.
I also ran a bit on the treadmill. The run felt really good after a break. I’d hurt my ankles in Texas and was a bit worried about whether I could run but it was fine. The weather in Oregon is back to rain. Indoor workouts it is.

For dinner I made us spinach salads with chopped carrots and on my salad, sliced strawberries. I used just vinegar and oil for the dressing. Our fridge is looking really pathetic.
Michael cooked up some chicken thighs. Originally we bought the chicken thighs at Costco because they were about half the price of the chicken breasts. Then we discovered they were delicious and easy to prepare!
Thursday
I biked to work. It sucked. I got rained on horribly and struggled to enjoy the bike ride. Plus I almost got hit. A woman in a car decided she wasn’t going to stop at a four-way stop and came inches within hitting me. The recent events have really soured me on bike commuting. I am actually looking forward to taking a break from it. 🙁
For dinner we went with freezer food! Costco ravioli to the rescue. So glad we had some on hand.
I roasted some tomatoes from the garden to top the pasta with and added some Trader Joe’s meatless meatballs. A little olive oil and fresh parmesan cheese as the “sauce.” I liked the simpleness of it and the roasted tomatoes were plenty of “sauce.”
I made us spinach salads. Red onions and strawberries are a wonderful (and surprising) combo!
Friday
My normal swim day! Yeah! Back to routine. I love the pool. Especially on rainy winter days.
QUESTION: How do you get back to your normal routine after vacations? Do you get right back at it or take a few days off?

Day after vacation I usually do a Curves workout and pay real close attention to how much water I drink (travel days are usually below normal consumption of water). By the second day I am back on track. I always have frozen veggies, fruit, chicken and salmon in the fridge if I do not get to shop during the first 24 hours.

Those ate great tips. I forget about drinking more water while traveling. And yes, having frozen food helps.
