Apparently I was going to do my own little Duathlon (sort of) on Friday! Friday morning I slept until the glorious hour of 8:15 am and as I languished in bed, enjoying my day off and considering sleeping more, I realized I had too much to do. I got out of bed, dressed and drove to the grocery store to get some last minute ingredients I needed for some potluck recipes I was making. I also got an iced coffee. It was desperately needed (and the sun was finally out so iced sounded good).
I wanted to swim and I also wanted to bike, so I packed up my “crucial” items I need for swimming in a backpack and dressed for the bike. I headed out in bike shorts and a short sleeved shirt, enjoying the sunshine and cool breeze. I biked very quickly on the highway and got to the I-205 Bike Path.
The bike ride is short but uphill, so it is a workout. I biked along the path, up the hill and then down the street toward the gym.
I arrived, locked up my bike and headed into the gym to change. My legs were feeling good after the bike ride. I was not concerned about my ability to swim.

Then I got into the pool. It was oddly hot. Like the water was the temperature of the hot tub, not a lap pool. It was strange and unsettling. I swam my routine but I unfortunately did not get to swim my best or fastest because the water was so hot! I imagined I was swimming in Jamaica but honestly, it just made me uncomfortable and hot. When you workout you sweat to regulate your temperature. In the pool you technically are still sweaty and hot but you are wet so you don’t notice it. And when the water is cool and a normal temperature you don’t ever feel overheated from a hard workout. In super warm water? Yeah not so much. It was so uncomfortable.
As a result of the lackluster swim because of the hot water, my calories weren’t that great for the session. But something is better than nothing in my book. And I was just happy to be in the pool.

I dried off and changed back into my biking clothes so I could go home and shower. It was rather unpleasant being sort of…moist…on the bike ride home. Luckily it was not very far. And somehow my bike ride home from the gym is always quicker.
I pedaled my little legs as fast as I could once I was off the trail and onto the highway because it’s my least favorite part of biking to the gym. I arrived home and could not wait to get out of my damp clothes and take a shower!
Bike Stats:
Time: 12 minutes

My total biking distance was 5.46 which makes my total for the week so far 21.46 miles. I spent the rest of the day doing laundry and then hours in the kitchen cooking and baking potluck food! I will share the yummy recipes next week. Finally I’ll leave you with photos of Fat Kitty exploring the suitcase, wanting to go with us. 🙂
QUESTION: Can you swim in a pool that’s too hot? What about too cold?
Lori
Do I see a triathlon in your future? They are fun!
I don’t swim much, but I actually prefer the water to be warmer rather than cooler. When it is too cold I feel miserable and don’t want to move in the water.

I really need to just DO a triathlon instead of hemming and hawing about it!
If the water is cooler it just means I swim faster to warm up. 🙂
