The sore throat I’ve been fighting off since last Thursday kept me up most of last night. Not my idea of a good time, especially when I was so exhausted I just wanted to sleep forever. So today I am taking it easy at home with my throat lozenges and tea and crossing my fingers it’s just allergies. I’m glad yesterday was a rest day. I needed it. My legs were sore from Sunday’s ride and Saturday’s workout, too.
If you missed the post about the benefit Michael and I went to, you can read it here. The update: that night raised sooo much money for Jerry and his family! I am so happy that I got to play a small part in that. I don’t know if it’s enough money to cover all the medical costs but I hope that it does and there’s some left over for Jerry and his wife to take a trip together. They need to spend quality time together and share what little time they have left.
Monday night Michael brought home some leftover BBQ chicken from the benefit. I guess they had leftovers so the coworkers got to take some. When I got home from Les Schwab (getting my flat tire fixed) we made dinner and watched a few episodes of “Californication” and “Damages.” In keeping with the BBQ theme, I opened a can of baked beans to go with my BBQ chicken.
It really hit the spot. The chicken was just as flavorful as a leftover. I kinda want their secret recipe so I can try and recreate this amazing chicken. The baked beans were good too.
Can you imagine that as a kid I hated baked beans? Now I love it. I also had a small salad with olive oil, balasamic and gorgonzola cheese:
Fat Kitty jumped into my light box during dinner, begging to have his cuteness photographed. Of course, as soon as I got close with the camera he broke his adorable pose and this is what I got:
What a dork! Speaking of animals, I have a new visitor to my garden. This time, it’s something I’ve never really seen before in person. This is my Lucifer plant, that I bought Michael as a present when we first started dating three years ago:
It was so tiny when I first got it! And it’s flourishing. Last year I planted the seeds from this plant in other locations to see if it would spread and another little Lucifer is popping up. Also, Lucifer seems to attract these little guys:
A hummingbird! This little green guy is so adorable and he’s been visiting Lucifer for a few days now.
What an amazing little creature. Those wings were going so fast. And he loves the Lucifer plant. I’m thinking of buying some hummingbird feeders to put in the back yard near the vegetable garden. It would be nice to see them when we’re sitting on the deck in the back yard.
We are slowly creating a garden oasis in our little plot of land. I am excited every day to see what unfolds: new veggies, flowers blooming, hummingbirds and wild bunnies. Would you believe we’re just a short drive to downtown Portland?
QUESTION: What’s growing in your garden? And what critters visit it?
Carbzilla
Wow – those hummingbird photos are amazing!
Um, we’ve been attracting slugs until we started using that organic stuff to keep them off the kale. We also have a ton of blue jays (nasty birds) that like to eat dead honeybees.
Sorry you’re not feeling well. I think I had terrible allergies a couple of weeks ago, and Chris and I are both not feeling so great after eating bowling alley food on Sunday but we’ll survive. Glad you took a day to feel better. TTYS!

I hope you guys feel better soon!!

great photos of the hummingbird! I love those birds, and they always make me think of my Grandpa Z… my grandparents fridge always had a couple huge jars of the red sugar water for his feeders… one downside – all the BEES! we loved watching the hummingbirds.
just yesterday I was taking photos of OUR critters… a family of FIVE new raccoons, and last night we saw a HUGE nutria. this thing was bigger than Basil – splashing around in the river. 😉
Lisa Eirene
I have NEVER seen a Nutria in person! I’ve only heard stories.
I am so happy I got some photos of the hummingbirds. I want to take more.

I loooooove hummingbirds! How fun!! I need to get a feeder (and some flowers) in my yard!
Lisa Eirene
I was so happy to see the little guy!

The hummingbird is beautiful!
In our yard we have armadillos. Armadillos have no natural predators. I used to think they were cute, until one got hit by a car in front of our house. After I saw his partner’s reaction, I decided that they aren’t so cute. We also have lizards with blue tails and red tails. Last summer one of our cats chased the lizards on the porch and after they escaped torment they had no tails!
Lisa Eirene
Oh no! Your cats lost their tails?!

Great picture of the hummingbird. I like that you are making it your little sanctuary in your yard.
I dog sit and they have a ton of hummers and I try to capture pics but it is pretty dang hard!

I was shocked I was able to get ANY photos! It is now a mission for the summer to get the perfect hummingbird photo.
Lori
Yay for hummingbirds! I adore them! Get some feeders for sure because hummingbirds will flock if you have enough nectar.
I only get hummingbirds really late in the season and they are just stragglers coming through.

I bought a hummingbird feeder at the store today. It’s in the backyard. I can’t wait to see it work it’s magic!

No garden for me 🙁 If I had a backyard I would grow fresh veggies and herbs for sure!!
Lisa Eirene
I have to say the best part is eating salads made fresh from my garden!
Eunice
Hummingbirds! We don’t see those around here much. Love that picture of your cat, hehe…
Lisa Eirene
He never sits still so I can take a good photo!
Roz
Oh wow…LOVE the hummingbird pictures! Love the photo of your cat too, they’re such funny creatures! (our cat Neva often comes in for a closeup like that!) Have a great day
Lisa Eirene
Thanks Roz! I was shocked I was able to get a good photo of the hummingbirds!
