My alarm went off at 5:59 a.m. Tuesday morning and I hopped out of bed. I am not a “hop out of bed” kinda person. I’m more a “roll into the fetal position, whining about getting up” kind of person. But I had to get up right away to go to the gym before an appointment.
Our rose bush is blooming, there was early morning dew on the flowers and my car. I had a quick bowl of cereal and headed out into the cool morning air. I could tell it was going to be a gorgeous day. I saw the sun rising; that seemed perfect for the Summer Solstice!
The gym was quiet and relaxing. I WISH I could make morning workouts my norm. The gym is a nice place to be at early in the morning!! I ran intervals on the treadmill and got sucked into a few episodes of Will & Grace. That was such a great show. I miss that show.
I did an okay 3.75 miles on the treadmill. One of the downsides of morning workouts is that I feel rushed. I hurried through an abbreviated weight routine and a little bit of Free Weight work. I figured doing a little bit of everything was better than skipping the weights altogether.
Time: 1:25
Calories Burned: 692
I stretched a bit, used the foam roller and did some ab work with the medicine ball then I hurried home. I had a “second breakfast” of two scrambled eggs and then went to my appointment. I had a nice 2 mile walk across the Hawthorne Bridge afterward. It was gorgeous and sunny out! Summer has arrived!
All day I felt hungry and like I couldn’t eat enough food. That’s a downside to working out in the morning. I told Michael that we definitely needed to get a burger for dinner! FEED ME!
SUMMER READING LIST UPDATE
I recently posted about some of the books I planned on reading this summer. I read a lot so that list will be forever evolving. I recently finished the second book in The Hunger Games Trilogy and loved it! I am anxiously awaiting a coworker to finish the last book and lend it to me. 🙂
I also just finished “The Secret Daughter.” It was a heart-breaking book but with a funny, light-hearted aspect to it too. It wasn’t just a downer to read. It’s about an Indian woman who has to give up her daughter because boys are preferred in that culture. The story spans about 25 years and it was a fast read (read it in two days). At first I was unhappy with the ending. But the more I thought about it, I liked the ending and it fit the story. I definitely recommend this book!
QUESTION: How did you spend the first day of summer?
Michelle
Thanks for the book recommendation….my daughter was adopted from China (similar circumstances are likely for her, though we’ll never know for sure). Though their stories break my heart, I feel compelled to read books like the above to keep me grounded in my daughter’s “roots”

That’s wonderful that your daughter is from China. When I was seriously looking into adoption a few years ago I thought about that. It’s so horrible what certain countries do to unwanted baby girls!
The book is good–you would really like it. It’s not a total downer, but definitely emotional.

Best decision EVER! I was approaching my 34th birthday with no “husband” material in sight … so, I took the desire to be a mom into my own hands and now I couldn’t imagine my life without her!

That was one of the reasons I looked into adopting. I knew I wanted kids, I knew I wanted to adopt, and I didn’t feel like I “needed” to be married to do so. In the end it was the cost that made me put my dreams on hold but someday I will adopt. 🙂

That rose bush is beautiful! Roses are one of my favorite flowers 😀

We have some pretty roses in our yard. My favorite flowers are probably lillies.

Great job at the gym!
I was just trying to find a new book to read today–I’m going to see if my library had The Secret Daughter. It sounds very interesting!

I’d be curious to see what you think of the book if you try it.
Sarah
I’m also trying to shift my gym time to the am. I’m struggling hard with the waking up part, but always happy when I’m all worked out for the day!!
The secret daughter sounds like a great read. I adore Indian literature so I’ll try to get a hold of it. I’d also suggest “The last song of dusk”, it’s absolutely beautiful.

I will check out that book too! Thank you!
