There’s good news and bad news. The good news: Michael and I had a wonderful Christmas together this year. The bad news? We woke up Christmas morning to no heat or electricity in the house.
Christmas Eve our lights flickered a few times and even went off for a moment but they came back on and we hadn’t thought much of it.
Michael started a fire in the fireplace–the first fire of the season. I love having a fire. It’s romantic and cozy. We bundled up in sweaters and opened presents next to the fire. I turned on a Christmas music station on Pandora and we listened to the music from my iPhone. Not quite ideal but we made do. We may not have had heat or electricity but we had each other and that’s all that matters.
The plan was already to go to Michael’s Mom’s house for Christmas dinner and presents. Without heat we decided to go a little earlier. I discovered that we had hot water (excellent) and Michael remembered that the hot water was on the gas line! Yay! Showered and dressed we drove across town to his mom’s house.
I always have a lovely time at his mom’s house. She’s a great cook and it’s fun hanging out with his family. His step-brother and step-sister were there too. They made lots of Christmas cookies and apple pie!
Michael helped his mom in the kitchen.
Michael’s mom made a roast for dinner. Plus mashed potatoes, green beans and salad. Dinner was wonderful and even more wonderful because they had electricity and heat! š
I got a wonderful, generous gift card from his mom for the Portland Running Company. I am sooo excited about that! New running shoes for me!
I had a wonderful time with his family. We left around 9pm Saturday night and made our way home to the frigid house, hopped into bed immediately with extra blankets. Sunday morning it was just as cold. The rest of Sunday was spent with family trying to help us with electrical problems, an electrician friend of mine coming over to help, and PGE finally coming out.
We had a fire in the fireplace so the house wasn’t too cold. Since half of the rooms had electricity I suggested Michael use an extension cord to move the power into the living room where he could use his laptop by the fire.
Despite the lack of electricity in half the house, the drama of getting it fixed, it was still a good Christmas.
UPDATED to ADD: Michael gave me lots of awesome cycling gear for Christmas! I will be posting about them later. š
QUESTION: Did you have a good Christmas weekend?
Kenz @ All The Weigh
It looks like you had a wonderful holiday! I love the photos! =)
Lisa Eirene
Thanks Kenz! We had a good time. It was good to see the family and spend time with them.
Carbzilla
Did they figure out what the problem was?
Thank goodness you had hot water! I cannot take a cold shower. There’s no way.
We had a nice weekend, but we’re both sick. It’s almost 5 pm, and I’m still in my robe and jammies. Sad. The weather sucks so not like we’re missing anything.
We gotta get better b/c we plan on the first snowshoe trip of the season on Friday!
Merry Christmas!
Lisa Eirene
Luckily it was something wrong with the PGE line so it costs us nothing! Christmas miracle!! We were prepared to pay my friend the electrician for whatever repairs but he realized immediately it was PGE’s issue and he called in a favor from someone he knows there. The PGE guy arrived shortly after that. We temporarily have everything back on until they can come back and fix the underground line or whatever was wrong with it…
I’m sorry you’re sick. That is such a bummer! Maybe too much food? I felt a little icky yesterday from eating too many Christmas cookies. š
I hope you’re well enough to go snowshoeing. We’re going this Friday too! Mt. Hood! Where you headed?
Carbzilla
I may have gotten my first headache from Chex Mix which has MSG but it was homemade so I thought the amount might be ok. There were a couple other factors, but I had no alcohol so it wasn’t that. It might have been hormonal, and Chris and I definitely have bad head colds. We’re doing a lot of sneezing, and we sound like people who do fake voices to sound like they’re sick.
If we’re feeling better, we’ll head towards Snoqualmie on Friday, and then razor clamming on Saturday. Otherwise, we’re sorta playing this whole week by ear.
Lisa Eirene
Oh man that sucks. I hope you guys beat it fast so you can have some fun (and some positive distractions like snowshoeing)…Hope you feel better!

ugh i hate power outages! we had one last year for a solid 12+ hours when it was super cold out-no fun at all! but Christmas would be worse!
Beth @ Beth's Journey to Thin
Argh how annoying. Sounds like you made the best of it with bed and extra blankets! Glad to hear you had a good holiday!
Lori
Sorry to hear about the power! At least it was warm enough
where you didn’t have to leave all together. We would never make it
without heat – would have to drain the pipes and go to a motel.
Sounds like a lovely day! (we had pot roast, too!).
Lisa Eirene
It was a good day. We lucked out being able to go to his mom’s house for the day!
M iz
we had such a nice nice nice family weekend here, too.
though we had power as well š
now I feel guilty!
Lisa Eirene
Rub it in! “Oooh we had power” š Just kidding š
